6 Things to do in Ponce
Ponce is a city known for its rich history and a local saying that goes 'Ponce es Ponce y lo demás es parking' meaning that the city is unique, and no other city compares to it. While there are many beautiful places in Puerto Rico, Ponce has a special charm to it that certainly separates it from the rest. If you have never been to Ponce or are looking for something different to do there here is a list that might inspire you!
Plaza las Delicias has much to offer from coffee shops, hotels, ice cream carts, street music, restaurants, artisan shops, the Cathedral and more. Wander around its streets and take in the colonial architecture. Plus don't forget to take a selfie at the golden Puerto Rican Flag in honor of Monica Puig winning the island's first golden medal in the Olympics.
Parque de Bombas is also located in Plaza las Delicias and is a historic firehouse that now serves as a museum. It is considered one of the most iconic landmarks in Puerto Rico along with the Castles of San Juan. Check out 7 Hours in San Juan for more on that subject.
The Art Museum of Ponce houses artwork from Puerto Rican artists and Europe. The collections change from time to time so be sure to check out their website before visiting at www.museoarteponce.org. The visit through the museum takes about an hour in a half. Students with an ID pay $3 and the public pays $6.
Bolera Caribe is a place to have fun and have a few laughs bowling. It doesn't matter if you are a pro or don't know how to play. Bolera Caribe is a great place to unwind after a day of exploration. There is an arcade and a restaurant that serves Puerto Rican cuisine. Tuesdays are crowded due to its special Tuesday deal but check out their website before visiting at www.boleracaribe.com for prices and opening hours.
La Guancha is one of the best places to visit in Ponce with its boardwalk by the Caribbean Sea. The best time to go is just before sunset. Feed the fish in the harbor, boat watch and people watch, take pictures with pelicans, eat a refreshing 'Piragua' ( shaved ice cone), climb the Guancha's tower to take in the view and get some worthy instagram shots or take a dip in the beach. There are also artisan kiosks and restaurants.
Isla Caja de Muertos is a beautiful uninhabited nature reserve. Don't get scared by its spooky name, Coffin Island, because here you will find beautiful beaches, hiking trails and the island's lighthouse. To get there take the private boat of Island Venture in La Guancha for $25 with previous reservations at www.islandventurepr.net. You'll have the place mostly to yourself. Here you can snorkel, tan, hike, kayak, paddle board and explore the Almeida Cave.
Ponce has much more to explore but hopefully this list inspires you to have a new adventure and wander around the city to see what you discover. Happy Travels!
