5 Epic Day Trips in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, the island of enchantment, is the perfect destination to enjoy the sunny weather, beautiful beaches, Spanish architecture, unique cuisine and exotic fauna and flora. The island’s rich history and vibrant culture give way to a trip full of variety and interesting adventures. First time visitors or locals search no further because I have compiled a list of 5 day trips around the island that will surely catch your curiosity.

SAN JUAN

The first day trip is exploring the old town of San Juan the Capitol of Puerto Rico. In the old town you will find the most famous landmark in the island which is the Castle of ‘San Felipe’ and San Cristobal. These two castles were used as fortresses in the colonial time to protect the island from pirates. The main characteristic of the old town is its colorful colonial architecture. You will also find many shops from artisan to high end ones, restaurants, museums and more. Buy a kite and enjoy the wind in El Morro before the sun sets with an ocean view.

CABO ROJO

Cabo Rojo was named after its red terrain and exotic nature. This city located in the south-west part of the island has many treasures to explore like The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service of Puerto, the Interpretative Center & Salt Falls of Salinas Puerto Rico, and ‘Los Morillos’ Lighthouse. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service of Puerto protects endangered species and educate the community on the importance of doing so. The Interpretative Center & Salt Falls of Salinas Puerto Rico is a place where visitors can immerse themselves in the dry forest that interestingly enough became dry after a massive fire while the Salt Falls are hills of Salt extracted from the Caribbean Sea. ‘Los Morillos’ Lighthouse is located at the edge of Cabo Rojo near the cliffs with breathtaking views of the ocean and unique photo opportunities.

FAJARDO

The ‘Cabezas de San Juan’ in Fajardo is a nature reserve containing different types of ecosystems in 316 acres of land. There you will find:

- A sandy beach which is open for bathing next door to the reserve over at the Seven Seas ‘Balneario’.

- The Mangrove Forest which contains button, red, black and white mangroves all explored while walking on a boardwalk through the forest.

- Rocky Beach which is not open for bathing is protected, but is a beautiful spot to relax and meditate.

- The Bioluminescent Bay that lights up in the dark when touched due to a plankton population that glows in the dark and is extremely rare around the world and more.

ADJUNTAS

Adjuntas is a fascinating jungle city and one of the colder regions on the island dropping to 40 degrees Fahrenheit during winter. The best activities to do while in Adjuntas are camping in Villa Sotomayor, hiking in Cerro Guilarte and kayaking in Lake Garza. Villa Sotomayor are villas in the forest but they have a special camping area. The stay includes private bathrooms and pool access which is more like glamping (glamorous camping) if you ask me. Hiking Cerro Guilarte, one of the tallest peaks in the island, takes about 45 minutes to hike and another 45 down. Enjoy a view of the north, west and southern coast of the island when you reach the top. Kayaking in Lake Garza is by far the best thing to do here in my opinion with an amazing local company that provides a three hour tour with snacks, pictures and videos for the price of $25.

PONCE

Ponce is a charming city with many things to do like bowling, museum hopping and shopping but the best things to do here are going to la Guancha where visitors can stroll through the boardwalk, feed fish, take pictures with pelicans and enjoy Puerto Rican cuisine. There you can hop over to Isla Caja de Muertos/Coffin Island on a private boat from a local company with previous reservation to enjoy the nature reserve and the privacy of almost having the entire island to yourself where you can snorkel, paddle board, hike and explore the caves.
